In a post on the Killzone blog, James Scott Bell says describing a character’s eyes can reveal a lot about your viewpoint character and the person they see.
“We look people in the eye when we meet them,” Bell says. “It’s the same with characters, isn’t it? The reader forms a picture of a character—eyes included—whether you choose to describe them or not.”
Bell suggests describing eyes for main and major secondary characters. Generally, we start with color, but be sure to use evocative language, rather than relying on vague description. Describe their effect on your POV character, whether they are dull, entrancing, or frightening. You can also use metaphor as a substitute, giving your reader an idea of color and effect with more compact language.
