In a post on LitReactor, Chelsea Stickle says you don’t have to write about everything. “Depending on your life experiences, you may feel obligated to write about: gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, sexuality, neurodivergence, trauma, etc.,” she says. “But you don’t have to. Seriously. You do not have to. You can write about whatever you want.”
Writing what you feel you have to – rather than what you want – can result in stories feeling forced and inauthentic. You might even be in the middle of a story and decide you aren’t interested. That’s ok.
