In a post on Writers Helping Writers, Lucy Hay offers tips for writing a likeable character.
- No Agenda. A likeable character is kind or generous because they are, not because they want something in return. They may even act when it’s inconvenient.
- Optimism. Overly optimistic characters can seem dimwitted, but characters who see the negative in life but remain hopeful are more relatable and likeable.
- Generosity. Likeable characters tend to put others first. They are cheerleaders and shoulders to cry on. Likeable characters are loyal, with your protagonist come rain or shine.
