Tips for Beating a Writing Slump

We share a lot of articles offering encouragement and mild mental health advice because writers need encouragement and some of us could use a pat on the back.

In the first of two posts on the Stage 32 blog, Sarah Jane Weldon suggests some offbeat ways to come back from a writing slump.

  1. AirBnB virtual experiences. Like Udemy or LinkedIn, these are free and low price Zoom classes on travel, food, art, and life coaching offered by AirBnB. Through sessions hosted by Olympians, Weldon picked up advice on working out, overcoming adversity, and developing a business mindset. Think about your WIP and there might be a relevant class for you. Weldon also says it’s a good way to add experts to your research file.
  2. Speaking engagements. Weldon suggests getting booked as a speaker on a cruise ship, which may not sound like fun during these pandemic times, nor realistic for anyone with a life. But ok. If you can swing it, you get free food and travel in exchange for giving lectures to paying guests.
  3. Patreon. Considering creating a membership platform for people who like your work or want to encourage your writing. You can also follow other creators and develop new relationships and connections.
  4. Sudowrite. AI writing prompts offering random characters and plot ideas. If gaming is your thing, the ‘4thewords’ app offers prizes for hitting your word count.
