Researchers at South Korea’s Institute for Basic Science have developed a remote control that could help treat neurological disorders and also control human minds. According to the scientists, the technology can control specific brain regions using magnetic fields. Applications of the device could include helping researchers understand brain functions, facilitating two-way brain-computer interfaces, and treating neurological disorders.
The researchers have tested the device on mind, focusing on parts of the brain governing maternal behavior. During testing, the subjects demonstrated a significant increase in maternal and nurturing behaviors. Testing on the parts of the mice brain that controls motivation resulted in increase appetite in the subjects.
A potential boon for people suffering debilitating neurological disorders, but also a bit unnerving. How long until these tools are integrated into our smart devices? What would you do if one of these remote controls fell into your hands? What happens next?
