The Japanese Ghost Hotel

In an article for Mysterious Universe, Brent Swancer writes about the abandoned and now possibly haunted luxury hotel on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

What was intended as a dream resort, the Nakagusuku Hotel had the misfortune of being built over sacred burial grounds. Local monks pleaded with developers to abandon their plans, citing the burial grounds, sacred sites, a cave inhabited by restless spirts, and a nearby castle that was also the site of many battles and much bloodshed. Undeterred, the developer soon regretted his decisions.

The project was plagued by freak accidents and mishaps, and workers talked of shadowy figures prowling the area. Soon, people decided the project was cursed. The developer decided to spend a night in the unfinished structure to prove them wrong, but was found the next day to have gone mad. That last part might or might not be true.

The project was halted due the contractor’s bankruptcy and the hotel was never finished. In time, the forest reclaimed the land, and the site now is a popular spot for urban explorers.

Great setting for a story.
