Howe and Hummell via Museum of the City of New York

In New York, in the latter half of the 19th century, attorneys William Howe and Abraham Hummel were the most successful criminal defense lawyers in town. Regardless of their success, their skill, showmanship, and lack of ethics made every case the Trial of the Century. Murder by Gaslight has a number of articles about the many accused murderers defended by Howe and Hummel.
