“The Motive Was Jealousy,” National Police Gazette, December 5, 1891

Murder by Gaslight shares the tragic tale of Salvation Army Captain Hattie Smith, murdered in Nebraska in 1891. After an event honoring a French leader in the organization, Smith was shot by Private Nettie Biedler, who killed herself moments after.

Observers believed Biedler was jealous of the attention Smith received from her fiancé, but before she died, Smith suggested that Biedler was angry that Smith didn’t pay more attention to her.

Romantic jealousy? Unrequited love? A religious assassination? Something more sinister? What happens next?
