With 2 months left in the year, it’s a good time to check in on your writing goals. If you didn’t quite make the progress you hoped, now’s a good time to step on the gas so that you finish strong. In a post on Writers in the Storm, Kris Maze says you can use entrepreneurship skills to boost your productivity, even if you’ve haven’t yet turned your writing into a business.
“Writing fiction is a unique career because we work alone, talk about people and events that never happened, and delight in the imaginary worlds in our heads and hearts,” Maze writes. “It is easy to get off track and neglect those worlds we create when the real-world buts in.”
If you want to get into a better headspace with your writing, Maze suggests treating your writing like a business and holding regular business meetings with yourself. Every few months, schedule time to review your goals and progress. Make it official. Read the minutes of your last meeting. Reflect on your goals, assess your progress, and figure out why you’re missing targets. Plan your next month or two.
Schedule a time and show up. Offer refreshments. “You, my writer friend, are the CEO of your dream. Treat that honor with the respect it deserves,” Maze says.
