We generally limit our use of dice to table top games, but historically, they have been used in spellcasting and divination. Having evolved from the use of knucklebones, dice were used to help their users make decisions, choose direction, or foretell the future. Low numbers generally foretold woe, but three ones were considered lucky.
According to an article on Strange Ago, Duke University researchers used dice in a 1945 study of psychokinesis. “In an attempt to see if people could influence the dice rolled, researchers found that people who concentrated did influence the dice,” the article says. “Alcohol, distractions, and strong, negative emotions reduce a person’s ability to control the dice. However, caffeine helped people focus and increased their accuracy scores.”
