More than one writer has fallen victim to Second Book Syndrome” – the problem of writing a book that lives up to the expectations set by the first published novel, or even writing one at all. In our view, this falls into the category of “good problem to have.” Getting a first book in print is a major accomplishment, no matter how well it sells. We should all be so fortunate.

In a post on Writer Unboxed, Nancy Johnson shares what she learned when she tried to keep her momentum going after her first novel received positive attention. We thought her advice was equally applicable to writers who haven’t yet been published, too. Johnson’s advice includes taking your time to write the best book you can and respecting the type of writer you are. Also, she urges us to protect our writing space by remembering why we write in the first place.
