In the late 1980s, the nuns of the Sisters of the Order of Poor Clare heard that their bishop planned to close their convent, disperse its nuns to other outposts, and sell its artwork and holy relics. Unfortunately for the bishop, the nuns weren’t keen on this plan. Because they owned their convent, they were able to change their bylaws to secure their rights to the land and all their property. Over time, they sold their art collection, relics, and the convent itself, ensuring that they kept the proceeds. They bought a castle in the south of France, some horses, and other worldly conveniences, but their freedom was short-lived. The man who helped them sell the convent turned out to be a con man, the sale was voided, and the properties returned to the Catholic Church.
