In a post on the Killzone blog, James Scott Bell talks about the importance of taking risks in your writing. Bell discusses a number of risks and why you should jump at them:
- The Risky Idea. “I think each novel you write should present a new challenge,” Bell says. “It might be a concept or ‘what if?’ that will require you to do some fresh research.”
- Craft Risk. Are you trying new things with your craft? Have you heightened the stakes for your protagonist? Are you letting characters act boldly or take desperate acts? Are you upping your style game with more precise language and interesting structure? If you’ve never written in first-person, should you try it? Is there a new genre you can explore?
