In a post on ScreenCraft, Shanee Edwards share 10 storytelling tips from Oscar-winning writer and director Guillermo del Toro. Here are three:

  • Embrace the Monsters. “I really don’t care much about the idea of normal – that’s very abstract to me,” del Toro said. “I think that perfection is practically unattainable but imperfection is right at hand. So that’s why I love monsters: because they represent a side of us we should actually embrace and celebrate.”
  • The Obstacle is the Path. “Every day, you’re going to get 30 curveballs,” he says. “Take what is there and make it work…whatever you see as the obstacle is yelling at you. This is the way to a better solution.”
  • Express Your Unique Voice. “2000 years into civilization, every song has been sung, every story has been told, but your voice hasn’t been heard,” del Toro says. Your qualities and your defects. Nobody has organized those shiny bits the way you do – that’s voice.”
