Create a Strategy for Your Writing Goals

In a post on BookBaby, Steven Spatz says creativity is necessary for your writing, but a strategy will help you meet your goals.

Along with commonly expressed advice on finding your most creative time and setting up an adequate workspace, Spatz suggests you try interval training, like writing sprints. “Use a simple kitchen timer to force yourself to just flat-out write,” Spatz explains. “Set it for ten minutes to write as much as you can. You’ll censor yourself less if you just write whatever comes naturally and edit later.”

Spatz also recommends reading as much as possible, especially books that inspire you or make you envious. Read more books that make you think “I wish I’d written that” and fewer that make you think “I could have written something better than that.”
