Before the Acid Queen, There was the Bride

14
Bernice and Carlyn

Who doesn’t love a cold-hearted killer with a catchy nickname? Chicago’s Bernice Lundstrom earned her title of the Acid Bridge not long after her marriage to Darby Day, son of a wealthy Chicago family. Only a few months after their wedding, Bernice asked Darby to buy her a second home to live in. When a confused Darby declined, Bernice threatened to kill him or herself.

After a few faked suicide attempts, Bernice bought a two ounces of nitric acid from a drug store, confronted her husband at home, and tossed it in his face. Bernice escaped with her sister Carlyn and later drank poison. Bernice fell into a coma. Her husband lost sight in one eye. After her release from the hospital, Bernice was arrested. Though she later claimed that the acid splashed her husband by accident, a jury found her guilty of assault. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison, but served only 14 months. Darby died a few years later during surgery, his death possibly hastened by the attack.
