In a post on the Messy Nessy blog, Freya Bainbridge digs up some UK slang from the Regency Era (1795-1827), the period when King George III was found unfit to rule and the crown was governed by a regent. Fans of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton might recognize terms such as the Ton or Dowager, and the anyone who’s ever watched British TV has heard the phrases “what the deuce?” and “bad form.”

But what are the meanings of a Venetian Breakfast, “to give the vowels,” “on dit,” or a Cheltenham Tragedy? You can read about these slang terms and more at the link, and then sprinkle them in your Regency-era story.
