An archaeological dig in northwestern Saudi Arabia uncovered evidence that the region was densely populated and dynamic during the Neolithic period. In a perplexing find, archaeologists found 1,600 monumental rectangular stone structures, as well as evidence of animal sacrifice. This discovery and evidence of a cultic society predates Stonehenge and the arrival of Islam in the area. “It makes the mind race that we have structures as big as five to six football fields, made of thousands of tonnes of stone, that not only cover such as massive geographic region but that also are 7,000 years old,” said Dr. Hugh Thomas, co-director of Aerial Archaeology in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Projects.

What do you think the culture was like? What did they leave behind? What have archaeologists stirred up by disturbing this site? What happens next?
