In an article for Smithsonian Magazine, Kellie Gormly writes about Kate Warne, America’s first woman detective and the first female employee of the legendary Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Warne convinced Allan Pinkerton to take her on by asserting that she could get information that he, as a man, could not. She would be able to infiltrate places without suspicion, because no one would believe a woman could be a private detective. Pinkerton agreed to take her on. Warne proved her value and later helped uncover and thwart a plot to assassinate newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln before his 1861 inauguration.
That story’s taken, but this fascinating woman can stand more than one interpretation. What sort of formidable woman does she inspire you to create? What happens next?
