Confession: The Editorial We is terrible at keeping a journal. I started more than a few journals in grade school, but never knew what to write in them. I wish someone had told me that I didn’t have to recite my (boring, traumatic) day, but could write about anything I wanted.

Someone like Lisa Tener, perhaps. In a guest post on C.S. Lakin’s blog, Tener suggests 10 ways you can use journaling to strengthen your fiction writing or spark ideas. Brainstorm ideas, jot down overheard dialogue, interview your characters, complain about scenes or characters that are giving you fits. It’s all good, and then it’s all on the page for you to mine later.
