Sherwood Anderson died from peritonitis, caused when his intestine was punctured by a cocktail toothpick he’d accidentally swallowed. Aeschylus was beaned on the head by a tortoise dropped by an eagle. Tennessee Williams purportedly choked to death on a bottle cap but actually died of a Seconal overdose. Elizabethan poet Sir Fulke Greville died after physicians filled his stab wounds with animal fat, which caused his injury to become gangrenous.
