This week’s Write the Book prompt was suggested by Melanie Finn, who recommends starting “outside the box” when it comes to building character.

Instead of starting with personality, job, or family history, Finn suggests starting with sensory perception. One of Finn’s characters has a strong sense of smell. Consider creating a character by starting with one of the sense: unusual vision, textile experiences, smell, or taste.

Starting your character creation process with the senses can help you build a more unique protagonist, hone your ability to craft sensory language, and suggest scenes and plot points involving their unique perceptions.
