Hammer suggests seven key elements to introduce for your secondary characters so that they have a chance to shine as individual actors without overshadowing your protagonist or taking over the plot.

Those elements include a reason to cross the protagonist’s path; a strong personality, point of view, and voice; and independent goals and motivations.
