In the early 1800s, the Bell family was bedeviled by a witch that gave them so much trouble, she came be known by the family name. Though the folktale wasn’t documented until the late 19th century, the Bell Witch was well known throughout Tennessee for hitting her victims, impersonating ministers, and on one occasion, bringing out of season grapes and hazelnuts to a favored person during an illness.
