NASA has published research revealing that the herpes virus reactivated during spaceflight in more than half the crew aboard Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions. While only a few crew members showed symptoms, the rate of virus reactivation increased the longer the mission lasted, which suggests astronauts on longer flights – such as to Mars and beyond – could face serious health risks.
What other nastiness lies dormant in our blood or DNA, merely waiting for a space flight to arise? What happens next?
