In a blog post for beginners on her Fiction University site, Janice Hardy offers advice on landing your ending. She suggests that writers answer several questions about the state of their protagonists, such as whether or not the protagonist achieves a successful outcome and how they do it. Is the protagonist’s goal resolved? Have they solved an inner struggle? If you can’t answer these questions – or if the answers are weak – Hardy says you might have a problem with the conflict in your novel, or even the plot itself.
