Scientists have discovered a new family of virus that turns its victims into a type of stone. Dubbed the Medusavirus, the virus was discovered in the waters of a Japanese hot spring. Once infected, a host becomes dormant and forms a thick, hardened shell, the outer layer of which is covered in hundreds of spikes.

Though Medusavirus seems confined to using ameobas as hosts, we’re imaginative enough to wonder what would happen if the bug jumped to plant or animal life. Was the Greek Medusa merely a carrier of this virus? What other villains or tragic figures could be explained by science? What happens next?
