How to Tell If Your Reader Will Care by bigpulp

Janice Hardy has another good blog post this week, this time discussing how writers can tell if their readers are likely to care about their story, their protagonist, and their problem.

Hardy suggests writers test their stories with some simple (to ask) questions: What if the protagonist walked away from the story? If the repercussions would be minimal, Hardy says your stakes are too low. What if a secondary character took the protagonist’s role? If the story would unfold in the same way, your stakes are too generalized and should be made more personal for your protagonist.
