Traditionally, a Doula – from the Greek word meaning “servant-woman” – helps bring souls into the world as a midwife for women choosing home birth or hospital alternatives. However, one group is training doulas to participate in end-of-life care, to help escort the living from the world.

What other occupations can be turned on their heads in imaginative ways? What other rituals signifying happy events – weddings, christenings – could be altered to give comfort and closure to the dying?
