During her interview with the Write the Book podcast, Emily Bernard, author of Black Is the Body: Stories from My Grandmother’s Time, My Mother’s Time, and Mine, offers a helpful exercise for writers struggling to make a villain or antagonist more relatable.

Bernard says the best villains are born in ambivalence, and writers should try to make the reader love the antagonist before hating them. For her writing exercise, Bernard suggests writers pick out someone someone they dislike and write about something that makes them lovable.
