In an interview with the New York Post, author Lynne Olson discusses her new book Madame Fourcade’s Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France’s Largest Spy Network Against Hitler. During the war, Fourcade used patriarchal expectations of women to her advantage as she led a vast network of underground resistance operatives. Working with a French military officer, Fourcade helped build a network of informants across Europe before the war began. Once France was invaded in 1940, this unlikely spy took her people underground, where she relayed information about the German’s movements of troops and weapons until the Allies liberated the country in 1944.
