In a long post on CrimeReads, Scarlett Harris examines how our culture’s fascination with evil often translates into the romanticization of evil men. As a notable recent example, Harris discusses the recent Netflix documentary on Ted Bundy and the new film about the serial killer, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile, in which he’s portrayed by an occasionally shirtless Zac Efron. “I don’t think the rise in the aforementioned content just comes down to a blatant romanticization of violent men,” Harris writes. “Maybe our obsession with observing these disarming yet dangerous men is an exercise in survival: rapists, murderers and con men are just as likely to look like the boy next door as they are to be living next door.”
