Science journal eNeuro has published the results of experiments examining whether humans are able to respond to the Earth’s magnetic field. During the test, participants were connected to an EEG and placed in isolation. During the next hour, the direction of the magnetic fields around the participants’ were rotated repeatedly, thanks to a device called a Merritt coil. After the tests, none of the participants said they could tell when the magnetic fields changed. However, for four of the participants, the EEG readouts showed a specific brain response, suggesting that humans can respond to Earth’s magnetic field.
This trait is likely a leftover from our primitive days, but still – Is Magneto so far-fetched? Could developing this extra perception give humans the ability to navigate using the Earth’s magnetic field, like birds? Or would we just starting pooping on a north-south line, like dogs? What other extrasensory perceptions do animals possess that humans would find helpful? What happens next?
