In a recent post on The Script Lab, Ken Miyamoto from ScreenCraft points out five reasons shock endings don’t work. Number 1 seems important – You didn’t know how your script (or novel) was going to end before you started writing. “How can you possibly build to any cinematic climax meant to shock or thrill audiences without knowing the ending while you’re writing the script?” Miyamoto asks.
Other reasons your surprise ending might be a surprise letdown? You didn’t leave clues for the audience and or build up the twists and turns before the very end.
