In a post on Two Drops of Ink, Christopher Fox urges writers to learn the rules of writing for the specific purpose of breaking them to make a vital, fulfilling career. “When you work tension between mastering the rules and defeating them, you equip yourself with the intentional decision of making language work to achieve your writing goals,” Fox writes. As examples, he urges writers to make up words, use jargon, and skip the class/workshop routine – all of which contravene the common wisdom. “There really isn’t a grammar or stylistic rule that can’t be broken to convey the right idea with the appropriate nuance,” he says.
