Not as scary as horror, and perhaps not as obviously otherworldly as weird, the uncanny is unsettling, disturbing. The uncanny gives you the feeling that something isn’t quite right, but won’t tell you what. As the author describes it, the uncanny “looks real, seems real, but is just not quite…right.”
The article identifies some examples of the uncanny – a doppelgänger or disembodied limb – and describes how it can be used to create atmosphere and a sense of mystery.
